Motivational Interviewing with Women Sex Workers

Homeless women who sold sex for money or drugs were recruited to discuss their substance use and HIV risk in this pilot study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.  Using Motivational Interviewing style, 27 participants were asked about their priorities and values.  Four months after the initial interview, 25 women returned for follow-up and reported decreased drug use, decreased sex work, and increased lawful employment.

The women expressed appreciation for the respect with which they were treated.  Motivational Interviewing's collaborative tone may have accounted for the surprisingly high return rate at follow-up.
