Magdalenas' Priority: Safe and
Decent Housing
A key finding from the Magdalena Pilot Project was that the women's
recovery from drug use and sex work was extremely difficult without
safe and decent housing. An especially important component of
recovery included the women's desire to have a place where their
children could visit. Most of the women had lost custody of their
children, and they had little hope of regaining custody if they were
living on the street.
Health Care for the Homeless staff used findings from the Magdalena
Pilot Project to request funding from SAMHSA to use for housing for the
women. That grant was funded and an apartment complex was leased
with sufficient grounds for play space for children.
Thus, the happy outcome of the Pilot project was addressing the
participants' top priority: creating their own home where their
children were welcome. The apartment complex and the community of
women now living in it is called Tierra del Sol. It includes case
management and harm reduction treatment.
